EVERYTHING RISES OR FALLS ON LEADERSHIP

By Jim Mastin Sr

As far as I know, a college president, maybe 50 or more years ago coined the statement, “Everything rises and falls on leadership”.  He was a good and strong leader and very successful in his profession.

Any person in a place of leadership should certainly investigate that statement and all it’s ramifications.  For, if it is true, you hold in your being the success or failure of your company.  You really can’t blame the economy, though it does present challenges.  You can’t completely blame the government, although these days it is certainly not friendly toward businesses.  With all the regulations, taxes, forms, and bad policies, it can be difficult.

But, in the end, it still all depends on leadership.  In the middle of a down economy, a poor run government, high prices and slow work, some are still doing quite well.  Our other company does inspections for banks on houses they are financing to be built.  We are still inspecting houses costing $300K, $500K, a million and more dollars.  Some people have businesses with good leadership doing well.

OK, so what does a man or woman have to do to be a good leader?

Maybe we can look at some successful leaders and see what they have said and get an idea.  Sure, some of these will be big buck people, but it pays to listen to them.  There is some reason they were successful.  And, the same principles apply to any size business. So, if you have problems with employees or subcontractors, see which of these apply to you.

If your business just won’t grow, see which one applies.

If you have dissatisfied customers, see which one fits.

Well, just about any problem we business owners face can use these famous quotes from some very successful people.

“The secret of success is to do the common thing uncommonly well.”                      J.D. Rockerfeller

“People are definitely a company’s greatest asset. It doesn’t make any difference whether the product is cars or cosmetics. A company is only as good as the people it keeps.         Mary Kay Ash

“Care about your people and they will care about your business. Forget that and watch profits go down the drain.”        Hal Rosenbluth

“Good judgment comes from experience and experience comes from bad judgments. – Dr Warne W. Dyer

“Good leadership consists of showing average people how to do the work of superior people.” – John D. Rockefeller

It takes 20 years to build a reputation and only five Minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you will do things differently. – Warren Buffett

“Outstanding leaders go out of their way to boost the self esteem of their personnel. If people believe in themselves, it’s amazing what they can accomplish.” – Sam Walton

“I hire people brighter than me and I get out of their way.” – Lee Iacocca

There you have a lot of wisdom from a few very successful people.  Oh, and don’t forget,  “Everything rises or falls on leadership”.   Dr. Lee Roberson
